Considering the Cinema Ep. 021: Movies, COVID-19 and the Apocalypse

Ep. 021: Sea Fever and Mini Review Movie Marathon

What the hell happened since we last spoke? Wow. 2020 has been a doozy already. Welcome to Considering the Cinema, Episode 021. In this unforgettable solocast episode, your late-night host Jason Pyles (aka “Jay of the Dead”) sits down behind the mic just before midnight on Thursday, April 9, and brings you an impromptu, off-the-cuff, Mini Review Marathon of more than 40 movies — many of which are 2020 films, believe it or not. Jay podcasts into the wee hours of the morning on Friday, April 10. And he concludes this episode with a Feature Review of Sea Fever (2020), which released globally on VOD on April 10, 2020. Hang in there, and stay healthy!

  1. Of course Uncut Gems and Good Time seem related; they are by the same writing/ directing duo: the Safdie brothers. As for Brigsby Bear, you have me beat.

Just wanted to drop in and thank you for this episode. I actually enjoyed the unedited format. If that allows you to release episodes at faster clip, I’m all for that! Happy Easter Jay.

    • Oh my goodness! Nice catch! I feel dumb for not realizing that. Yeah, I couldn’t help but feel like those two movies were related somehow. Now it makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for giving the unedited episode a try. I really appreciate the feedback.

  2. Jay! I’m so happy to hear how you are and what you’ve been watching. Thanks for the recommendations! “The Hunt” has been kind of on my list but I needed one trusted, solid, personal vote for it. Happy to be able to put that on my “for sure.” I was also really intrigued by your recommendation of “The Chosen”. I might give that a shot as well.

I really liked the unedited format (sorry, but it didn’t really seem any different to me at all – probably a lot easier with only one speaker). I also liked the part at the end about the clouds. I think about that often. “From a Distance” and all that.

The tone you speak in here reminds me of another podcast episode that I listened to recently. It’s from 99% Invisible (SUCH a good podcast, by the way). Episode 395 – This is Chance! Redux is about a time in 1964 when a huge earthquake hit Alaska, and the only communication available for a lot of people was the radio, and one remarkable voice that came out of the darkness offering help and hope. It has some re-enactment work in it and is just wonderful.

And if you end up loving that episode, back up one to 394 and listen to another quarantine episode; Roman Mars Describes Things as They Are.

Hope all the listeners here are doing well. Miss your comments and company.

  3. Concur with the others here too, Jay! I really like the format and it suits the show really well. I enjoy your banter on HMW, but I also think the solo-cast is a good look for you. Great reviews!

Your thoughts on theaters and the joy of going to the movies definitely resonates here in this corner. My family and I make movie-going a regular tradition, and we were already picking out our viewing plans for the summer when the first trailers showed. For us, our kids are younger and I have the advantage of knowing there’s tons of great movies they’ve never seen. My wife and are planning an ‘alternative release schedule’ for over the spring/summer, on Friday nights where we’ll fire up the projector, make the popcorn, and get them excited for some of the stuff they’ve never seen. Until, of course, we can get back to the real deal.

I think your podcast does brighten the day and it does encourage, so don’t sell yourself short on that. And I’ll second your review of ‘The Chosen’. Christian-produced films are, by-and-large, usually disappointing and/or cringe-inducing to me, but this one was both sincere and forthright about what it wanted to be, and there’s a surprising amount of skill in its production. It breathes a life into the scriptural accounts that doesn’t feel dramatically forced, while refraining from erratic embellishment.

Love the way you poised this to release in conjunction with a new release, and you picked a good one. I watched Sea Fever after listening to this, and agree overall with your thoughts. It’s a fun and intriguing watch, and I think it’s worth seeing especially for fans of having a little sci-fi with your horror. Almost an X-Files episode, sans Mulder and Scully.

Have a good one Jay, and looking forward to the next installment!

  4. I’m just getting around to catching up on some podcasts and I just finished this episode. Good stuff Jay. If this is what it’s like without editing, I vote continue this format. It felt like I was hanging out with a friend. Lots of good recommendations in this one too. And who knew Jay of the Dead was a borderline Swifty?! Haha

  5. These late night solo casts are really awesome! Hope you can do more of them.

Thanks for all the great content. You have been my favorite podcast host for the past few years.
