What are the Top 10 Horror Movies of the 2010s Decade? Your late-night Horror host, Jay of the Dead, has invited two Horror podcasting legends to help him bring you three lists that will give you the best of the best in Horror cinema from 2010 through 2019. In Episode 014 of Considering Horror Cinema, Jay welcomes The Southern Gentleman GregaMortis from Land of the Creeps horror podcast and the Ghost Hunter Ron Martin from The Resurrection of Zombie 7 horror podcast.
In addition to bringing you our Top 10 lists (which don’t have much overlap, by the way), we also bring you our Horror Honorable Mentions of the 2010s Decade, which would constitute 11 through 15 on our lists, as well as a reflection on the overall decade as we bring you The Best Thing That Happened to Horror in the 2010s and The Worst Thing That Happened to Horror in the 2010s.

I’m so happy that you included “No Escape” in your Top 10 HORROR of the Decade! (Do you see that, everybody?) Great picks, Sam! “The Wailing” is quite incredible… I need to watch that again.
Thanks for your list.
-J
I really enjoyed this episode. I really liked hearing Jay, Greg, and Ron together. It was like a monster mashup of sorts.
Ha ha ha Totally. “It’s a graveyard smash!”
-J
I left a voicemail with my top ten of the decade but was not until the show was ready to drop, so I will replicate it below. Such a strong decade in horror that this was so difficult that my ten honourable mentions could easily be the first ten. All three number ones are very strong. I love that Jay chose Incident In A Ghostland. It has one of the strongest openings I have seen in a while. I look forward to the next episode.
10. Cargo
9. What We Do In The Shadows
8. The Loved Ones
7. Summer of ’84
6. Tucker and Dale vs Evil
5. You’re Next
4. Creep 2
3. Green Room
2. Train to Busan
1. Terrified
honourable mentions: Mutants, The Bay, The Sacrament, The Endless, Found
I haven’t seen “Mutants” or “Cargo” yet. I look forward to tracking those down. Great list.
Thanks, Bill!
thanks…they are definitely worth a watch…well written and quite similar in that both characters are infected and slowly becoming zombies. let us know what you think of them…
Hi Bill!
Thanks for your list and email. “Found” is quite a disturbing Horror film. I assume you’re referring to Scott Schirmer’s movie from 2012. I’m glad you showed some love to “Cargo.” That’s a special movie (and short film) with a brilliant dilemma / concept. Great list! Thanks again.
-J
Happy New Year’s!
Thanks so much for this great episode! It was an amazing decade for horror. In the 60s, 70s, 80s, we were occasionally treated to great, ground-breaking movies that re-defined what could be done with the genre. Nowadays, I think there has never been a higher standard for quality or so many movies to choose from each year. (Good thing I have you and your friends to keep me up-to-date on what’s out there – I don’t want to miss a thing.)
I loved hearing about your, Ron, and GregaMortis’s favorite movies. There were a couple of surprises (i.e., titles I had never heard of before), like “Jackals.” I can’t wait to check those out.
I hope you have a great 2020!
My list:
10 Hagazussa
9 Insidious
8 The Invitation
7 A Quiet Place
6 Melancholia
5 I Saw the Devil
4 Hereditary
3 The Witch
2 Get Out
1 Annihilation
HM The Conjuring 2
HM Black Swan
HM Train to Busan
HM Maniac
HM V/H/S
P.S.: I would have loved to have included Better Watch Out because it’s such a triumph over budgetary constraints, though it came in around #20. Tough competition.
P.P.S.: Anyone reading this who likes my list–I have a collection of original short horror stories out that you’ll also like. The Sound of Fear https://www.amazon.com/dp/1694373576/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_6R6cEb9MC6AAY
Interesting that you had Hagazussa #10 for the decade. Very well shot and a film for the senses. It is the definition of a slow burn. It didn’t even make my top 20 for 2019…lol
I *love* horror movies where there is a bullied/mistreated outsider who rises up to avenge themselves on their tormentors.
“Hagazussa” is a brilliant example. The town callously treats her like a persona-non-grata witch, and, over the course of the movie, she hardens into that role (much to their – and her own – misfortune). I was also drawn to the sensorial way they illustrate the rustic period/environment you mentioned.
Those points also make this movie similar to “The Witch” (2015), which I also loved, yet the way the two stories unfold feel different enough that I didn’t mind revisiting those themes in “Hagazussa.”
If you can recommend any other movies along those lines, please let me know!
Have a great 2020, sir!
Vicious Victor!
Thanks for your comment. “The Invitation” is definitely one of my all-time favs. I have always meant to get around to watching “Melancholia,” but I didn’t know it was Horror! Now it’s even more of a priority for me. And yes, make sure you see “Jackals.” It’s good stuff!
-J
Hi Jay – I saw “Jackals” last night. It was excellent. Thanks so much for the recommendation!
“Melancholia” is one of a kind. Certainly more drama than horror, though it’s brilliantly shot, brilliantly written and it scared the hell out of me. I think you’ll dig it.
I hope you have a great 2020, man!

Love your work JOTD!

I’m definitely going to have to watch “Creep” since it’s on your list and GregaMortis’s. “Bone Tomahawk” at No. 2 makes me happy. And I’m glad to see another supporter of “Halloween” (2018).

It is interesting how people rate films and in some cases, a rating might not reflect it’s position on a given list. This is why I choose to rate films academically. If a movie hits high marks in all the requisite categories, it will receive a higher score than for movies that do not.
This decade has been very strong. Is it as strong as the seventies or eighties? I think the 2010’s can make an argument or is at least in the conversation for being among the best decades for the horror genre. I submitted a best film for each year as you know, and when you look at the lists that people have come up with, you can see the level of quality overall is very high.
Ron and Andy are wrong about The Lighthouse. It’s better than The Witch. I rated both films with the same score, but I liked The Lighthouse more. The Witch was my best film in 2015, but The Lighthouse was 6th for me this year, which speaks to the quality of 2019. It is very surprising that no movies from 2019 made your list.
Also, Ron couldn’t be more wrong about The Conjuring. Who from the production company said those things? Was it James Wan, because if it wasn’t, it doesn’t matter. He’s the only one that does matter when it comes to The Conjuring. In fact, I would argue that The Conjuring is the most significant horror film from the entire decade. It is absolutely a great horror movie, so I’ll back GregaMortis on his obsession. “The Conjuring is a step back for horror”. The most ridiculous quote of the year.
Even with The Conjuring gaffe, this was a fun episode. It’s always fun to hear GregaMortis on the podcast. This is the first I’ve heard from Ron, but I enjoyed some of his takes on the decade. Jason, it’s always a pleasure and I look forward to seeing more from this podcast in 2020! Thanks for all your fine work.
Is anyone else curious to find out what Doctor Shock’s top ten of the decade list looks like???? JOTD needs to shake that information from him!!
I’m sure that Dr. Shock and the guys will be doing a Top 10 Horror of the Decade episode over on HMP.
However, I don’t know that Dave has committed to presenting his Top 10 Movies of the Decade (for All Genres) on any podcast yet. Of course he’s always invited to present any of his lists on Considering the Cinema. I’ll send him this comment, just so he’s aware that I have an open invitation and some listener interest!
Thanks!
